Nov. 11 (1863) Carson City Nevada Wells Fargo Pony Express Raid Paid 25 Cts Cover
To S. Sinsheimer Esq. San Francisco California. Manuscript Docket at left Nov. 13/63. Condition wrinkles, paper repair from paper loss at lower right edge,closed tear at lower. INFO -- August 11 1862 to 1865. Wells Fargo & Company carried mail and news from Virginia City to Placerville. From Placerville via railroad to Sacramento then by boat to San Francisco. In addition to the adhesive Pony stamps, there were printed envelopes Paid 25 cts which was started in 1863. This was for Special Delivery and included Rapid Letter Service along the Pony Trail to San Francisco.

10c brown, right margin single, tied by blue Wells, Fargo & Co. Express, Silver City, Utah oval handstamp on 3c pink entire to Folsom, California. Rev. J.E. Benton was a member of California State Assembly who was at Folsom. Cover repaired at indicia. 1976 PF Cert. NO.53106 States that genuinely used on a repaired U38 Entire,with a large portion added at right.

1863 Virginia City Pony Express B.F. Hastings used as Frank to 80 Merchant St San Francisco Cover
manuscript at left A.K. Gwin received Oct. 21/63 (1863) Wells, Fargo & Co. Virginia City, N.T., Oct. oval date stamp on 3c pink entire (U35) to San Francisco, with second strike canceling indicia, bold blue "B.F.H. & Co. Oct 19, 1863 company cds at center (B.H. Hastings & Co., bankers) used in lieu of express frank. The absence of the Wells Fargo frank on this entire is in accordance with a little known agreement between Wells Fargo and other banking institutions allowing them to transmit, via Wells Fargos express lines, envelopes displaying the banks handstamp in lieu of the Wells Fargo frank. B.H. Hastings briefly had a field office in Virginia City, therefore complying with this agreement. In Sacramento B. F. Hastings Building, which was the western terminus for the transcontinental Pony Express from 1860-1861. This cover during what is known as the Wells Fargo Virginia City Pony Express period going to and from the Comstock mining operations. Cover expert repaired at right. Ex Henry Clifford collection.
